Getting The Most For Your Used Car

You’ve decided to sell your car so there are a few things that you should know to be sure that you get the most money possible. There are some steps you should take that go past just placing an ad in the local newspaper, trade publication or online. Here are some things to think about.

The internet is the most complete source you will find for information on any subject and for selling your pre-owned car, truck, van or SUV. You can find car clubs online for just about any type, style or model of new or used vehicle and they will usually have forums and message boards that are easily accessible after registering. Don’t just register with their message boards to sell your car though as these folks treat such behavior as predatory and will promptly revoke your membership. But they really can be your best resource for model specific information on your new or used vehicle, for parts and services and to sell, swap or trade.

The internet can also provide you with the means to find out what vehicles similar to yours will bring when you decide to sell or trade. One source that has all vehicle values listed with valuations for your particular area is Kelly Blue Book or the Black Book. Other sources are the online auctions such as eBay Motors that have cars, trucks, SUVs and just about anything automotive. You can find out what vehicles in the same condition as yours are currently bringing.

Another great place that you can find locally is a car club for your particular vehicle. If you own a tuner, convertible, muscle car, 4X4, or some other specialty or custom vehicle you will more than likely be able to find one in your area. These clubs can be your best bet for finding people who are looking for a vehicle like yours, especially if it is in great condition or just the right color.

Many clubs have newsletters that they will sell advertising space. Placing an advertisement directed at such a target audience can get you the most bang for the buck. Another place to run targeted advertising is in specific automotive publications such as the Auto Shopper, Auto Trader and Auto Extra and specialty books like Truck Shopper or Motorcycle & RV Shopper. People that read these are shopping for a vehicle like yours so don’t forget the tried and true use of traditional print advertising.

Try talking to your mechanic about your car too. They can be like the ancient oracle when it comes to cars. They know people that are looking for particular cars and can sometimes point you in the right direction and even introduce you to a prospective buyer too. If not, they might be able to offer sobering advice about your particular vehicle and what kind of buyer would most likely be interested in what you have to offer.

Finally, if you are determined to sell your car to an individual instead of trading it in, invest in having it professionally detailed. Here this is money well spent. A professional detailer will be able to make your vehicle look and most importantly for women-smell like new. For men, be sure and have the engine and undercarriage steam cleaned. This one step will drastically increase the amount of money you can get for your used car when selling to an individual. But, if you are going to trade your old vehicle to a new car franchise, don’t bother. They’re going to either auction your vehicle off immediately or send it to their own clean-up department before adding it to their inventory.

And one more thing before you dispense with your old vehicle, empty the glove box and console. You’d be surprised at what you can find out about the previous owner from the flotsam left behind in these two receptacles. With these considerations in mind you should be able to fetch top dollar for your efforts. Good luck.
